If any of you want that sound, Producer's Choice, just offered it up as a Patch Library for Kontakt 5, called 808 Warfare. I also created 2 patches on my old Akai S-1000 rack, one were the bass sustains, and another were it just hits hard compressed, but doesn't rumble. I'd kept that file on a floppy disc, and used that recreated 808 Bass, on tons of my own productions. I kept it when Unique Studios closed back in 2004. Funny I still have the original DAT tape of "Poison" with all the final mix passes, & stems. I was wondering if anyone could inform me as to what module they used to create the sound or who played bass on that track. That record made history, and as I said, to this day people often ask me how they got that sound. Bell Biv Devoe - Poison Bassline In the pre-chorus for the song 'Poison' by Bell Biv Devoe there is an absolutely ridiculous bass line. That was critical, or it would simply mudd out. Two singles from the album, Poison and Do Me, both reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1990. The sound was also set up to cancel out when you hit the next note, so there'd be no overlap, like when you hit an open hit hat sound that ends the second you hit the closed hat on the pads. The band is best known for their debut album, the multi-platinum selling Poison, a key work in the new jack swing movement of the 1990s that combined elements of traditional soul and R&B with hip hop. It was then tuned accurately, across the MPC pads, so that you could play it as a perfectly tuned bass line, so that the boom tone would be correct harmonically.
Once done, all you'd hear was this awesome boombastic bass sound. The way it became a bass sound, is that they rolled off the attack, so you'd no longer hear the click sound from the front end of the 808 Kick. We then sampled the 808 Kick with a long tail into the MPC. ran it thru the SSL Console, and with George Karras's excellent use of EQ'ing on the Pultec EQP-1, he got that sucka boomin' and tight. It was Engineer George Karras, Produced by Spiderman & Dr Freeze, in Studio B of Unique Recording in New York City. That record was a smash hit, and I've had many people bring up "Poison" wondering how they got that sound. It was an 808 kick that they USED AS A BASS, for the 1st time in recording history. In fact it wasn't an actual sound module at all.
